Question: Why don't prisoners get Overtraining symptoms when lifting all the time?

Answer #1:

What's you're basis for saying this-- movies? Chances are, they were built to begin with, or they were doing it in those specific circumstances long enough for their bodies to adjust to their intake/workout, which takes a duration and level of consistency the lifestyle of your average free man simply doesn't offer.

Answer #2:

Well the first thing I should point out is your making a generalization and assumption. You are generalizing that all prisoners are buff, and you are assuming they do heavy lifts/strenuous exercise everyday.

From what I've looked over on the supposed prison workouts a lot of them involve large amounts of calisthenics and body weight exercises. It's possible that because of this their muscles never get to the point where they are damage so much that they cant repair quick enough.

Answer #3:

First of all, they don't get to use the weight equipment for "hours all day." Plus, they get plenty of sleep which helps out a lot in avoiding overtraining (a luxury busy people on the outside don't have). They also get fed plenty of calories a day. Heck, their meals were planned by a dietician.

If that's not enough, they can buy more food high in protein from the commissary. This article talks about it in detail:

Basically, our tax money is going into funding weight equipment and high-calorie diets to buff up prisoners so they can beat the crap out of us when they get out of jail.
